The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a fall in crime rates around the world. Whilst some forms of crime declined, other forms, such as cybercrime and money laundering, have emerged and heightened elsewhere. In addition to enforcing lockdown protocols, law enforcement agencies are now tasked to solve a multitude of crime forms augmenting the reliance on digital technologies for real-time criminal intelligence and faster response to crime incidents.

Despite these challenges, law enforcement units are equipped to adapt to the changing threat landscape and mitigate next generation crime through novel cross-border partnership models, forward-looking training programmes and enhanced community relations. Taking place from 14 – 15 March 2022, the WPS Crime Prevention Conference will gather global leaders from the law enforcement ecosystem to strategise and lay the foundation to creating a safer and more secure world.

CONFERENCE THEMES INCLUDE
  • International cooperation
  • Cybercrime
  • Law enforcement during pandemics
  • Financial crimes

Policing advanced societies: How can technology-enabled community policing aid crime prevention

Leadership Interview | Room A

Preventing crime is a complex task involving the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, criminal justice, and the community. Though technology can help law enforcement agencies connect with the societies they operate in, a growing lack of trust in the police makes it complicated to understand patterns, gather evidence, and reduce instances of crime. How can leading police forces leverage technology to enhance community trust? How can this collaborative effort protect communities from criminal activities?

Attendee insights:

Algorithms and criminology: Enhancing precision and transparency in law enforcement and criminal justice systems

Leadership Interview | Room A

Growing security concerns have increased the utilisation of machine learning, big data, and analytics as core tools of crime prevention. Whilst such technologies were initially earmarked for criminal risk assessment, they can be used, today, to predict crime based on historical patterns. With the widespread use of algorithmic policing systems, how can the police prevent algorithmic bias in crime prediction? Can fully automated intelligence networks enhance the safety and security of communities and individuals? How far are citizens willing to let the police intrude into their private information and lives to keep them safe?
