Duarte Nuno Vieira is Full Professor and Past-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and visiting professor in several other Portuguese, European, Asian and South American universities. He is President of the Ibero-American Network of Forensic Sciences, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, President of the Portuguese National Academy of Medicine, Vice-President of the European Confederation of Experts on Evaluation and Repair of Bodily Injury and Director of the Coimbra University Centre for Humanitarian and Human Rights Forensic Research and Training and of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Observatory for Human Rights . He has been President of the International Academy of Legal Medicine, of the International Association of Forensic Sciences, of the World Association of Police Medical Officers, of the European Council of Legal Medicine, of the Mediterranean Academy of Forensic Sciences, and of the Latin American Association of Medical Law, among others. He as also been President of the Portuguese National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences. He works on regular basis as Temporary Forensic Consultant for the Office United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and he is Member of the Forensic Advisory Board of the International Committee of the Red Cross and of the Forensic Expert Group of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims. He as been award, among others prizes, with the Douglas Lucas Medal (2014), The Milton Helpern Award (2020) and the Clyde Snow Award (2020) by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
